To welcome the new year, one of the rituals we are performing is to burn incense during each one of the first seven days. At a Japanese bookstore called Kinokuniya, in New York, I had purchased seven colorful sticks of incense in the shape of chiles. Today we burned the fifth stick of incense. We chose the purple one. Two more to complete the first week.
